Kempston Rovers hosted Bedford Town in a massive game for both sides in Bedford. The derby was all set. Kempston started the day in 18th place really needing to push away from the bottom spots in the league. Bedford need to take every game as it comes as they try to extend the gap with Berkhamsted.
The game began and it was a frantic start. A Bedford corner lead to Kempston counter attacking and Callum Donnelly being the only man back for Bedford threw himself at the ball and missed it. Charlie Hayford was clean through with Shaun Keane chasing but he smashed the ball onto the bar. Soon enough Bedford had a penalty after Charley Sanders was brought down on the edge of the box. Rene Howe stepped up to take and unusually blazes it over the bar. Rene Howe soon redeemed himself after a Bedford corner came in which Kempston failed to clear but it eventually fell to Rene Howe who hit it in. After many more Bedford chances and poor Kempston defending it was 0-1 at half time. It was more of the same on the second half. It was only a matter of time before Bedford got a second. Danny Setchell scored to give Bedford a two goal cushion and what a goal it was. Some nice work from Bedford following a free-kick lead to the ball coming out to Danny Setchell on the edge of the box who hit it on the half-volley and it flew into the side netting. Bedford didn't stop here as they hunted for more. A set piece was whipped in but cleared as far as Will Summerfield who's shot rattled the post, it rebounded out to Charley Sanders who tapped into the open goal to make it 0-3. Bedford won a penalty soon after Will Summerfield was taken down. Rene Howe stepped up to repair the damage from his first half miss. He calmly slotted it into the corner for his 29th of the season. Bedford wanted one last goal and it was Danny Setchell who added insult to injury. The ball deflected off of the Kempston defender and fell to Danny Setchell's path and he found the bottom left corner from far out. Bedford ran out comfortable 0-5 winners.
This keeps Bedford top of the league. Berkhamsted won at Colney Heath meaning the gap remains 4 points separating the two sides. Bedford only have 6 games left to play and are 5 wins away from promotion. Kempston now look in trouble but Wantage Town and Colney Heath both lost.
